Goreng Pisang
Nasi goreng pisang ambon…. sounds familiar?
Yes, fried rice and that green banana liquor…
Did you know that:
- ‘pisang’ is Malaysian or Indonesian for banana and
- ‘goreng’ is Malaysian or Indonesian for fried
So fried banana or pisang goreng is a must try if you visit Malaysia. You can find the pisang goreng stalls "in the middle of nowhere", like the one we passed here in Kuala Lumpur driving around in a not too crowded housing area:
How to order goreng pisang
If it is your first time eating goreng pisang, just ask for 1 Ringgit (satu ringgit) and you get as much as what you see in this bag:

Ask for panas : hot ones, so you get the freshly cooked ones, as like with French fries: you best eat your goreng pisang hot!
Unlike you would think, goreng pisang is not served on a banana leaf: we are talking deep fried, so the brown bag they give you, will absorb already some of the oil.
If you like it a lot and you are not filled up, you know how much more goreng pisang to order. Just know that some bananas make very delicious goreng pisang and others don’t. A popular goreng pisang seller will only use the best bananas for his goreng pisang. How do you know? By trying them out, 1 ringgit is about 25 US dollars, so more or less peanuts for western visitors.
Goreng Pisang Recipe
You can also make goreng pisang or fried bananas at home. Then you are sure the oil you are using has been used only so many times that you know of.
Anybody having a goreng pisang recipe, please leave it in the comment. TheSkinnyCook will add his goreng pisang recipe in one of the next posts.
