Turkish delight recipe

Condolences to my Greek Cook in the streets

What I was missing this year compared to the last time I was in Kos, was the old lady sitting in the street where I went for a little stroll each and every evening. Seems the old yet generous lady is no more, so this post is in honour of her and her outmost Greek hospitaliy…

Turkish Girls

Last time I got invited by one of these lovely Turkish girls today! She must be twice my age: at least 80 years old and always sits on her doorstep each time after lunch I stroll around the little streets of my hotel.

And each time I pass her doorway, I can smell a delicious smell of baked bread. So TheSkinnyCook wanted to know her secret: what’s cooking every day?

To my amazement this Turkish woman spoke… Italian! I already found out that lots of Turkish people in Bodrum speak German, and now this old, nice lady starts talking to me in Italian :-)

Easy Pancake Recipe

So the daily smell of baking bread was actually pancakes. And I got treated to the real Turkish culture: the inviting Turkish hospitality! And I got served this pancake as well. Her quick and easy pancake secret was:

old culinary school turkey

make enough pancake mix and
put the remaining pancake mix in the fridge for the next lunch

2 simple things in an amazingly clean fridge:

  • her pancake mix
  • preserved cucumber

Basic pancake recipe

Unless my Italian needs more brush up, this is her basic pancake recipe (in good old-fashion spoons and cups measurements)

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups fresh water
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar
  • 10 tablespoons flour
  • a pinch of salt

Taste and smell of these Turkish pancakes: delicious and quite filling :-) But for me : it’s not about food: it’s about the people cooking the food!

People first, then food :-)
