I always say: you are what you eat, so if you eat good and healthy food, you become healthy.
Sounds good in theory, until you are faced with fatal illnesses. If you cook a good meal but the ingredients have a little remaining pesticides: all these little pesticides find their way somewhere in your body… And do you see what’s killing you? Never!

Featuring a Filipino recipe from Filipina mom Chesca. On her blog you will see Chesca is an ex-skin-diver: skin-diving is between snorkling (like I prefer) and free diving: we all enjoy the beautiful world under water without extra oxygen tanks.
Filipino food recipes
Now I have to admit, I just haven’t any Filipino food recipes under my sleeves, as I never even visited the Philippines. Yet whenever I see a new recipe from another country, it feels like I am visiting that country already…
So let Filipina mom Chesca
take us on a foody travel to the Philippines!
In the Philippines we eat with a spoon and fork (well some of us eat with our hands, no utensils…but let me explain that another time).
Each time you spoon something in, it is common to put a little bit of everything in EACH spoonful, for the Filipino food recipe below that means: put a bit of rice, fish and egg…all at once in your spoon and dribble in some vinegar again with each spoonful.
Filipino food recipe
The original Filipino food recipe uses fried dried fish. Since Chesca now lives in North America (read: not very diverse compared to Asian food…) she has had to find substitutes for certain comfort food. Nothing beats "the locals" looking for substitutes for original ingredients!
Fried dried fish can be substituted by store-bought anchovies : these canned anchovies taste very much like the dried fish (also called tuyo or dilis, in Malaysian food it’s called ikan Bilis) they have in the Philippines.
Quick and easy Filipino food recipe
- canned anchovies in olive oil
- steamed rice
- sunny side up egg
How to eat Filipino style?
Take a little bit of everything in one spoonful, dribble some vinegar on it(Tabasco optional) : it is a taste explosion.
Gastronomically and culinary yours,
Chesca the ex-skin-diver

Again a delicious recipe from Wokkingmum! Check out her great wok-king site : "Let’s get wok-king" or just look at her chicken wings picture : it looks like it tastes and it tastes like it looks: delicious culinary standards from Wokkingmums’ private kitchen. (Which in my opinion she should open to start a restaurant…)

How to cook chicken wings
Weight loss tip from Wokkingmum
This is a frequent dish on our dinner table.
Sometimes, we have it as supper!
That’s why I can’t really find my waist lately.
Mirin substitute
This Chicken Wings recipe calls for "Mirin". Mirin (味醂) is a Japanese rice wine similar to Sake but low in alcohol content and Mirin is slightly sweet in taste. One could say it’s a Sweet Rice Wine.
If you don’t have Mirin by hand, the easiest Mirin substitute is sake added with some sugar and briefly boil it. Which in my opinion is a waste of good Sake
…
Another Mirin substitute could be sherry or white wine with a little sugar. Yet best is to buy Mirin in the Asian section of your supermarket, should be nearby rice wine and rice vinegar.
Mirin
Mirin Taste: Mirin is an essential condiment used in Japanese cuisine, with a slightly sweet taste. It is a kind of rice wine similar to sake, but with a lower alcohol content. In previous Japanese times, Mirin was drunk as a sweet sake.
Mirin Use: Mirin is used to add a bright touch to broiled fish or to erase a fish’s smell. A small amount used in the place of sugar and soy sauce often improves a dish. It should not be used in large amounts, as its flavor is quite strong. It is sometimes used as a sushi accompaniment. Mirin is commonly used in Teriyaki sauce.
