Main reason to buy food that is in season, is the price: there will be an over supply to start with. Other than that, the food doesn’t have to be transported from overseas, nor be stored in cold containers which keeps prices low and makes sure your food is the freshest as possible.
For those that think about the sustainability of the planet: the lesser the carbon footprint of local seasonal produce, the lesser our planet will suffer from the slowly but surely heating up of the earth.
Most importantly you need to know that even in winter there is cheap seasonal produce like cabbages and root vegetables. Spring is the season for asparagus and peas, early summer brings cherries and strawberries, late summer brings tomatoes and all other ‘warm’ veggies like sweet peppers, zucchini or cucumber. Autumn is famous for the Halloween pumpkins and sweet corn.

Apart from looking at a Jamie Oliver’s calendar, you can also go to your local farmers market, ask what’s on offer from local produce and adjust your cooking recipes accordingly.
