Cooking mussels
Nothing easier than cooking mussels: mussels will
open when they are cooked. Don't wait for the last mussel to open,
because some mussels will just never open.
Steamed mussels
The easiest mussel recipes will have some liquid
on the bottom of a big pot which will be boiled. The mussels will
be added and a lid will be put on the pot. The steam that cannot
escape out of the pot will be used for steaming the mussels.

New Zealand Green lipped mussels
If you live in New Zealand, you are so lucky to get the green
lipped mussel freshly provided. In Malaysia there is not much Sea Mussel available,
and these New Zealand green lipped mussels are mostly frozen when shipped. What
is good about green lipped mussels is that they contain a high dose of "glycosaminoglycan",
which helps to keep the cartilage between your joints, meaning you will get
osteoarthritis at a later age, that is if you will ever get osteoarthritis.
Buying Mussels
Buy only mussels that are completely closed or
mussels that close when you touch them. These are "live mussels" which
you want to use for your best mussel recipes.
Do not buy mussels with a broken shell, nor mussels
that feel very heavy (they are probably filled with sand in stead of with mussel).
Do not buy light mussels: if you shake a light-weighted mussel and you feel
that something inside is shaking up and down as well, you have a dead mussel.
Cooking mussel recipes
- Celery is a perfect mussel stock ingredient.
- For a decent meal: use about 3 pounds (1.5 kg) of
mussels for each person.
- If you cannot open the mussels before cooking, means
the mussels are fresh!
Creamy mussels mussel recipes
The stock that runs free when cooking mussels
can be thickened with butter and or cream, to make a delicious mussel sauce
to dip a loaf of bread in.
Mussel recipe
Before using mussels in mussel recipes, the mussels
should be cleaned and de-bearded. This means you should only have clean shells
with no funny stuff being attached on the mussels. Then you start doing what
is said in your mussel recipe.
