Day 72: 61 mg cholesterol from fish

December 6, 2012 By Low Cholesterol Diet Leave a Comment

Today I learned that 100 gram (3.5 oz) of pomfret contains as little as 30 mg of cholesterol, compared to double the amount in salmon and triple or 4 times the amount in meat.

For lunch my wife fried 1 pomfret for 2. To my amazement, 100 gram of pomfret fish contains according to nutrition.com.sg 30 mg of cholesterol. This is very little compared to other fish like cod (62 mg), tilapia and salmon (68 mg) and sole (78 mg). I forgot to weigh the fish, but another one in our freezers weighs 165 gram, so for estimation sake, let’s stick to the number of 30 mg.

Simple lunch with congee, fried cabbage and fried pomfret: about 30 mg cholesterol per person

Add to that congee (my dear wife burned her mouth and wanted easy to swallow food, hence congee and fish) and fried cabbage and lunch was served.

Delicious mashed potatoes served with fried fish and peas

For dinner: delicious mashed potatoes with no cholesterol, peas and fried pomfret. Read here how to make delicious, creamy mashed potatoes without butter nor eggs in this easy vegan mashed potato recipe. Following the estimations of day 13 : this 80 mg piece of threadfin fish contains about 31 mg.

Total cholesterol intake today: about 61 mg

  • breakfast: 0 mg
  • lunch: 30 mg from 100 gram (3.5 oz) pomfret fish
  • dinner: 31 mg from 80 gram (2.8 oz) threadfin fish

Interesting to learn that pomfret – the fish my mother in law has been recommending me for the last 14 years to eat more – has an amazingly little amount of cholesterol compared to more common fishes. Add to that I finally managed to make delicious mashed potatoes without butter, olive oil nor cows milk.
